This year, we commemorated Global Recycling Day by organizing a school campaign to sensitize young school children on recyling and provide some materials for proper waste disposal and waste management by the pupils and teachers of Omalas Destiny International School, Uyo Akwa Ibom State.
After meeting with the Proprietor of the school, we broke out into sections to educate the pupils – some members of the team spoke on climate change, what it means for us and how young people can take action towards reducing the effects of climate change. Others spoke on recycling, how to identify an item that is recycleable and the 3Rs.
Items donated to the school included; waste bags and waste bins. The school campaign was also used to flag of our #OneBinIsRubbish awareness campaign to encourage waste seggregation at the consumer level. Simplistic sustainable ideas shared with the students were;
- REUSING your mayonnaise conatiner as a storage can for beverages
- REUSING your soft drink bottle as a storage bottle for groundnuts or any of their favorite nuts
- Closing the refridgerator properly or putting off electronics when not in use to reduce carbon emissions.
- RECYCLYING plastic wastes – pupils where asked to play the game “where is the RECYCLE sign” on used plastic bottles.
- DISCOURAGING throwing of waste especially plastic waste that clog the drainage throw the car window.
” I’ve heard of recycling before but I never knew that we can recycle in Nigeria – I’m very happy to learn this”
The day ended with the presentation of gifts to the school for sustainability of the lessons learnt from the school campaign.
